Join us as we hype our sheroes of the past and the future.

Of Note

Did you know that our Concertmaster Dawn Posey is also a founding member of a groundbreaking women’s quartet called Kassia Ensemble in Pittsburgh, PA?

The string quartet is a musical genre that features two violins, a viola, and a cello.

"I firmly believe that only in the United States could a Peruvian-Chinese-Jewish-Lithuanian girl born with significant hearing loss in a hippie town successfully create a life writing string quartets and symphonies." - Gabriela Lena Frank, winner of a Latin Grammy

Even though Cécile Chaminade was accepted to the Paris Conservatory at age 10, her father did not allow her to attend as he didn't consider it proper at the time. A Romantic and French composer, she was the first woman composer granted admission to the National Order of the Legion of Honour.

Jessie Montgomery won a Grammy Award in 2024. Check out her acceptance speech here.

One of the most prolific composers of the 19th century, Fanny Mendelssohn wrote over 500 pieces of music and conducted. She was the granddaughter of the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, sister to composer Felix Mendelssohn, and was recognized as a musical prodigy at a very young age.

Chen Yi was part of the famed class of '78 at the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music along with composer Tan Dun who wrote the score to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
