Opus Performing Arts – in collaboration with the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra – is proud to present four performances of The Nutcracker this holiday season!
Step into the Stahlbaum family’s home and watch as Clara’s world transforms before your eyes to enter a magical wonderland of toy soldiers, a blizzard of snowflakes, a flock of marshmallow sheep, and many other delightful surprises! From the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy to the audience favorite of Mother Ginger & her gingersnaps, this classical ballet, with a unique theatrical twist, continues to captivate Bellingham audiences year after year. Set to Tchaikovsky’s magical score, this celebrated story comes to life with beloved characters, intricate hand-made costumes and over 130 dancers from the ballet school of Opus Performing Arts. The Nutcracker includes Opus’ youngest ballet students as cupcakes, peppermints and other denizens of the Kingdom of Sweets, as well as their advanced dancers in the iconic roles of Nutcracker, Rat Queen, Peacock and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Gather your friends and family and embark on a journey where bravery and imagination save the day!
Accompanied this year by the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Yaniv Attar. Waltz of the Snowflakes features the Bellingham Youth Choir under the direction of Connie Campbell and Pearl Petaia.
Directed by Brooke Evans & Ian Bivins, with choreography by Brooke Evans & Celeste Hartsook, Opus’ The Nutcracker mesmerizes audiences of all ages and will include new surprises in addition to our favorite audience moments.
Pyotr Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker was premiered in 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg, Russia. This now famous ballet has been featured in movies, television shows, commercials, and even the video game Tetris.
The celesta gives The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy its special sound. The Nutcracker is thought to be the first full orchestra work to feature it. Tchaikovsky had the instrument brought over from France in secret for the first performance.
This is the first time Opus Performing Arts and Bellingham Symphony Orchestra are teaming up for The Nutcracker as we celebrate 50 years as Your Community. Your Orchestra. Come join us in this family tradition and experience music LIVE!
