The Bellingham Symphony Orchestra and Pickford Film Center have teamed up to activate downtown’s Bay Street in a one-of-a-kind event combining outdoor cinema with live music. This special one-time event, Sunset Flicks, takes place Friday, August 22, 2025. Festivities start at 7:00 p.m. and films begin at sunset.
The free, family-friendly event will include a raffle and prizes, as well as food and drink options for purchase.
Sunset Flicks kicks off a number of summer events that help launch the Bellingham Symphony Orchestra’s year-long celebration as it marks 50 years of making music in Whatcom County. This event will combine enchanting classical music and unforgettable silent films, creating a rare experience in a fun and accessible setting. Bring your folding chair and join us for a beautiful sunset followed by five fun films accompanied by live music.
Silent film music traditionally involves organ, piano, or orchestra playing sheet music or improvising. Composer Shostakovich played piano for silent films to help earn money for his family.
Felix the Cat is one of the original cartoon cats. In Felix Revolts, our favorite feline organizes a strike.
Buster Keaton's comedy One Week has newlyweds trying to make a home from a box kit. What could go wrong?
Suspense (Lois Weber) and The Hazards of Helen (Helen Holmes) are both directed by and star pioneer American women filmmakers. Weber's Suspense is legendary for its groundbreaking use of the split-screen. Both Weber and Holmes take us on a journey with these thrilling dramas that involve robbery, trains, and more! Our damsel may be in distress—but does she need rescuing, or will she save herself?
Georges Méliès' iconic A trip to the moon is a classic that is whimsical and fantastical.
The films to be shown are a selection of shorts made between 1902 and 1920. Curated by Spencer Sundell of The Sprocket Society, the program provides a sampler of the entertaining variety to be found in silent movies: hilarious comedy, thrilling action, amazing pre-CGI special effects, and even a cartoon.
