Activity

William Grant Still

Here is an activity featuring composer William Grant Still and his music.

William Grant Still is a composer and known as “The Dean” of African-American composers. His beautiful orchestral music incorporates elements of the blues in this piece, “Afro-American Symphony” or Symphony No. 1.

As You Listen...

  • This movement incorporates a 12-bar blues! The trumpet introduces the blues theme. Do you hear it?
  • Even though William Grant Still’s music was played on TV and by some leading orchestras, it is not as widely known as other American composers of that time period who are white such as Leonard Bernstein. By listening and learning, we can help to share Still’s music.

Learn more by checking out this Classical FM article about black composers or by reading this article about the piece.
